Tommy Hall, Jr.

Canton – Thomas “Tommy” Green Hall, Jr. 67, passed away on Thursday, July 12, 2018 at his residence following an extended illness.

A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Thomas Green Hall, Sr. and Genevie McCreary Hall. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Rhea Hall, who died in 2017. In 1966 as a sophomore, Tommy was a member of the Pisgah High School football team that won the first football state championship. In 1969, Tommy graduated as one of the school’s all-time great fullback and defensive backs. Tommy and three of his teammates were recipients of football scholarships to play football at Clemson University. He then returned home and worked at Champion International where he retired with 40 years of service at the paper mill. Tommy became a member of the Pisgah High School Athletic Boosters in the mid 70’s where he remained a member for over 40 years. Tommy recently received the Al Cline Service Award in 2018. He was a comfort and strength to each and every one that met him and truly was an inspiration to all.

He is survived by two daughters, Sheila Zavaglia (Joseph) of Asheville and Tammy Irish of Fletcher; one son, Anthony Hall (Jenny) of Northville, Michigan; two sisters, Annetta Andrews (Andy) and Patricia “Pattie” Chastain (David); one brother, Robert Lee Hall (Dennissa); and six grandchildren; Lauren, Jonathan, and Andrew Zavaglia, Grayson Irish, Henry and McKenna Hall.
