Edith Summerrow Whisenhunt

Mrs. Edith Summerrow Whisenhunt, a beloved member of her family and the community, passed away on March 29, 2024. She was born on April 5, 1926, to the late George and Iva Allen Summerrow, and was the youngest of eight children. 

A graduate of Waynesville Township High School in 1943, Edith started her career at First Union National Bank.  She transitioned to becoming a full time mother and raising her family. Later she returned to retail sales at Hale’s in Waynesville. Edith was an active and lifelong member of Hazelwood Presbyterian Church. 

Edith was preceded in death by her loving husband, Murray Ray "Bud" Whisenhunt Sr., to whom she was married in 1954 for 59 years until his passing in 2013.
 
She is survived by her four children, Murray Whisenhunt, Jr. (Sharon), Karen Owen (Bill), Laura Koob (Michael), and Mark Whisenhunt (Jennifer); as well as numerous grandchildren including Kaitlin Owen, Caroline (Matt) Brantley, Emily (Joshua) Tracey, Nathan (Emily) Owen, Heather (James) Gehman, Jacob Koob, Philip Koob, Katherine (Tom) Quinn, Meredith Whisenhunt, John Walter Whisenhunt; and great-grandchildren Gemma, Genevieve, and Isabelle.
 
One of Edith's greatest joys in life was her family. She cherished her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her love and support created lasting memories that will be treasured by her family for years to come.
 
Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at Hazelwood Presbyterian Church with Reverend Patrick Womack and Reverend Steve Muzio officiating.  Visitation will follow the service.
 
Mrs. Edith Whisenhunt will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for her family and friends. Her legacy will live on through the lives she touched and the memories she created with those she held dear.

The family is so appreciative of the staff and caregivers at The Haywood Lodge and Retirement Center for the exceptional care and loving support shown to Edith over this past year. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Edith Whisenhunt to Hazelwood Presbyterian Church (Missions Fund).
