"A Unique Spirit"

Waynesville, Mary Elizabeth Staiger, age 71, passed away on Monday, April 23, 2018 at her home after a long illness.

Mary Elizabeth was born March 25, 1947 in Waynesville, the daughter of the late Carl and Alice Stringfield Hill. She was a loved mother, wife, grandmother, educator, and friend to all she met. Mary Elizabeth graduated from Morristown High School in Morristown, Tennessee, she earned a BA in English at the University of Kentucky and a MA from East Tennessee State University. Mary Elizabeth was a highly respected teacher at Tuscola High School before accepting a position at Haywood Community College as the Chairperson of the Arts and Science Department and English Instructor. She retired from HCC in 2008 after 25 years of dedicated service.

She was an active member of Grace Church in the Mountains Episcopal Church, serving on the vestry and numerous committees. Her activities in the community included helping to establish Change Makers for Racial Understanding, NAACP, as well as activities at the Pigeon Center. Her interests included reading, family, and being with her friends and pets.

Mary Elizabeth was happily married to her husband, Douglas Staiger, for 33 years. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her two sons, Douglas Kurt Staiger, Jr. and Stephen Thomas Staiger; daughter-in-law, Kat Scott; grandchildren, Birch Cecilia Staiger, Maeve Eleanor Staiger, and Asa Kurt Staiger; sister-in-law, Susan Jane Staiger Lord, and her husband, Philip W. Lord; faithful companion, Lucy; and many dedicated and loving friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2018 at Grace Church in the Mountains, 394 N. Haywood Street, Waynesville, with The Reverend Joslyn Ogden Shaefer officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the memorial service.

The family wishes to extend thanks to her friends, medical team, and Hospice, who supported her through her long battle.
