“A Dedicated Public Servant”

Clyde - On Monday evening of October 30, 2017, our community lost a dedicated public servant, Mayor Jerry Edwin Walker of Clyde.

Mayor Walker passed away peacefully at The Homestead following a period of declining health. Jerry was proud to claim Clyde as his lifelong residence. He was a son of the late James Edwin and Mary Lorina Hipps Walker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Walker. Jerry was a graduate of Clyde High School. Following his graduation, he served four years in the United States Air Force. Upon completion of his military service, Jerry returned home and was employed with Champion Papers and Blue Ridge Papers with 42 years of service. Jerry was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Clyde serving as a former Deacon and Trustee. Jerry was also a long-time member of the Clyde Lions Club and was an avid coin collector. Jerry also enjoyed his family time of white water rafting with his brothers-in-law.

Jerry had a career of public service that spanned 40 years from 1977 until 2017. Jerry was appointed to serve on the Clyde Planning Board in 1977 and was then appointed to serve as alderman in 1980, where he served in that capacity until 2004. He then filled the unexpired term of Mayor Roland Leatherwood and has served as the Mayor for the Town of Clyde for the past 13 years. In 2015, Mayor Walker’s name was added to the Town of Clyde Wall of Honor in recognition to his many years of service.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joann Mills Walker; one daughter, Jeri Elaine Walker of Arlington, Virginia; one sister Barbara Davis of Clyde; one brother, Robert Walker and wife, Jackie, of Crabtree; and three brothers-in-law and their wives, Jack and Brenda Mills, Ronnie and Pat Mills, and Danny and Patsy Mills.

Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Clyde with the Reverend Dr. T. David Phillips and Reverend Carrol Lindsey officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Entombment will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 3, 2017 at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum with military honors. Pallbearers will be fellow aldermen of the Town of Clyde, James Trantham, James Mashburn, Dan Jesse, and Frank Lay. Also serving will be Dr. Kerry Cogburn and Don Essex.
