Maggie Valley

Maggie Valley, Virginia Tyler McNair (94) died at home on January 7, 2021 in the presence of her family. Preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, John B. McNair, Virginia was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her children: John C. McNair (Laurie) of Raleigh, NC; Robert W. McNair (Linda) of Hartford, CT; Virginia McNair (Orfay Reyes) of Siete Rios, Ecuador and Anne Bolin (Kurt) of St. Petersburg, FL, as well as by eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and many dearly loved friends.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia and raised in Miami, Florida, Virginia attended Agnes Scott College and Drew University. She met her future husband, John, while attending the University and they married upon graduation. The couple raised their family in New Jersey.

Having an exceptional eye for quality, Virginia started an antique business in 1972 which John happily joined upon his retirement from teaching. When they relocated to North Carolina two years later, they opened the Yesteryear Shop, first in Waynesville and then Sylva and it became a favorite haunt for many regulars.

Virginia’s spiritual life was at the core of who she was and her life’s work was caring for others. All who knew her recognized that she had a rare quality of being "present" and giving her full, loving attention and wise counsel to those around her. She never failed to see the good in others and the beauty in her surroundings, and she enriched the lives of those who knew her by helping them see what she saw.

The daughter of a Methodist minister, Virginia was an active member of several churches over the years, including most recently Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Lake Junaluska, North Carolina and Mary Taylor Memorial United Methodist Church in Milford, Connecticut.

Celebration of Life services are being planned for September.

The care of Mrs. McNair has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Homes.
