Troy Mann

Canton – Troy Weaver Mann, 81, passed away on Sunday, June 9, 2019 at St. Joseph Campus of Mission Hospitals.

A native of the Center Pigeon Community of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Thomas Worrick and Edith Clark Mann.  Troy attended Canton High School and graduated in 1955.  Shortly thereafter, he went to Pasadena, Texas and worked at the Champion Paper Company.  He attended Lee College in Baytown, Texas and studied business administration.  Troy was a member of the Texas National Guard (49th Armored Division).  The unit was mobilized in 1961 during the Berlin Wall Crisis and he left his job at Champion Paper to serve active military duty.

Troy met Nancy Hogan at Memorial Baptist Church in Pasadena, Texas and was married on May 23, 1957.  Nancy was a nursing student at Lilly Jolly School of Nursing in Houston, Texas.

In 1971, the family relocated to Canton.  After returning to Haywood County, Troy volunteered to help better our community.  He was one of twenty appointed citizens that were tasked with the design and building of the new Haywood County Courthouse in Waynesville.  Troy served on the Equalization and Review Committee, the Jury Pool Commission, and the County Planning Board.

Troy served as a member of the Canton Board of Alderman and was a member of the Canton Kiwanis Club for many years.  In 1977, he helped restart the Key Club at Pisgah High School and acted as advisor for several years.

Troy was an active member of Canton First Baptist Church for 47 years and served as a Deacon, Finance Committee Chairman and Sunday School Director.  He co-founded the Young Couples Sunday School Class.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nancy Hogan Mann; two sons, Randy Mann of Raleigh and Tim Mann (Lisa), of The Woodlands, Texas; three grandsons, Austin, Paxton and Cameron; two granddaughters, Kayleigh and Kaitlyn; and two brothers, Gary Mann (Terri) of Palatine, Illinois and Bob Mann (Kay) of Troutman, North Carolina

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 17, 2019 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Court Greene officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service with a reception at the Canton First Baptist Church fellowship hall at 12:30 pm..

Memorials may be made to the Goodson Sunday School Class and the Mann Sunday School Class of Canton First Baptist Church, 74 Academy Street, Canton, NC  28716.
