Rev. James Rogers

Asheville

Rev. James E. Rogers, 87, of Asheville, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at his residence.  He was born July 26, 1933 in Widen, WV to the late David and Ermal Rogers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Kevin, and brothers, Billy, Tommy, and Clyde Rogers.

James began his ministry as a teenager, choosing to attend Lee College in Cleveland, TN.  It was there that he met and married Oleta Wood. Originally, James was offered a scholarship to play basketball but felt a call to preach the gospel. He went on to pastor in the Church of God for 42 years in the state of North Carolina. During his pastoral tenure, he also served as Chaplain and EMT of the Swannanoa Volunteer Fire Department.  He retired from the ministry due to health issues in 1993.

He will be remembered by his loving wife of 64 years, Oleta; daughter, Pamela Rogers Nixon (Dave) of Staunton, VA; son, Scott Rogers (Aimee) of Weaverville NC; brother, Kenny Rogers (Lil) of Louisville, KY; grandchildren, Cynthia Hollif, J. Andrew Simonds, Nicole Owenby, Karissa Rogers, Kaila Rogers; great-grandchildren, Oleta Hollif, Conor Simonds, Paxton Owenby, Bennett Owenby, and Elaina Hollif.

A celebration of life is currently scheduled for 1:00 PM, Saturday, July 17, 2021 at Brookstone Church in Weaverville, NC.

The care of Rev. Rogers has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Candler.
