Lake Junaluska

Lake Junaluska, Rachel Buchanan Bishop, age 92, passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at her residence.

A native of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Roy and Luna Cowan Buchanan.  In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Billy Bishop, who died in 2017, as well as three sisters and four brothers.

During her work career, Rachel was employed by the U.S. Navy as a secretary.  Favorite activities included sewing and crafts.  Rachel loved her family dearly and they would gather on Sundays for shared meals and fellowship.  Grandmamma, as she was affectionately called, was the glue that held the family together.

Rachel is survived by her daughter, Malene Nolte, and her husband, Dr. Bill Nolte, of Clyde; her son, Bruce Bishop, and his wife, Camille, of Macon, Georgia; one brother, Harold "Dempsey" Buchanan, and his wife, Linda, of Sylva; four grandchildren, Cameron Bishop (Aubrey), Dr. Catherine Gardner (Casey), William and Cecil Nolte; and four great-grandchildren.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to the Care Angels for the comfort and care over these many years with Rachel.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at the chapel of First Baptist Church of Waynesville with Dr. Robert Prince officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service in the chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to First Baptist Church of Waynesville - Operations Fund, 100 S. Main Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
