Paul was born in Buncombe County and was the son of the late Dock Ted Whitted, Jr. and Iris Mildred Nix Whitted.  At an early age Paul earned the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America.  This accomplishment was the beginning of a life of service.  He was a 1975 graduate of Pisgah High School and attended Haywood Community College in the Fish and Wildlife Program.  Paul was employed at Evergreen Packaging with 42 years of service. While employed there he was a 20-year member of Evergreen Emergency Response Team, Firefighter and Medical Responder and was a Hazardous Material Technician.  Paul’s passion was with NC Search & Rescue Dog Association and CSAR (Canine Search & Recovery). He traveled to many areas of the United States to help train individuals with their Search & Rescue Dogs.  Paul was an avid outdoorsman and hunter and enjoyed his time at Lake Douglas.

Paul is survived by his wife of 32 years, Vera Chastain Whitted; two daughters, Shannon Burch (Patrick), of Cumming, Georgia and Pamela Williams (Brad), of Waynesville; two sons, Wes Whitted (Sue Hilliard), of Waynesville and Luke Penny, of Cullowhee; a brother, Michael Whitted (Anita Kaplan), of Wilton, Connecticut; five grandchildren, Cole Williams, Eli Penny, Braden Williams, Emerson Burch and Parker Burch.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 12, 2020 at New Covenant Church with Reverend Blake Stanberry officiating.  Eulogies will be delivered by Reverend Kenneth Rhinehart and Robby Corbin.  Firefighter final call honors will be accorded to Paul at the service.  Visitation with the family will be held immediately following the service and a reception with food in Paul’s honor will be hosted by his family and the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to SECU Family House, 1970 Baldwin Lane, Winston Salem, NC 27103 or to CSAR, PO Box 1771, Athens, AL 35612.
