Lake Junaluska

Lake Junaluska – Nancy L. Geyer passed away on July 8, 2022 at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

Nancy was born in East Orange, New Jersey.  She lived all of her early years in Keansburg, NJ and was a member of the United Methodist Church.  She and her husband Roger lived in the same town and at the age of 14, she invited him to her church’s youth group.  They soon became very close friends, fell in love, and were married in that church on June 6, 1953.  A year later while Roger was in college at Rutgers, she had their first child, Kathy.  While Nancy was the organist at Belle Vista Church in Clifton, Kathy slept in her carriage next to the organ bench.  A year later their second child, Bonnie was born.  By then they were serving the Anderson, Changewater and Port Colden circuit.  Nancy was faithful in bringing two babies to three services every Sunday for three years.  Both there and at their next appointment in Barryville and Eldred, NY, she was not only active in the WSCS, but also prepared refreshments for the many other church meetings held in the parsonages.

In the 23-year appointment at Rockaway, she continued the “hostess” activities, sang in the choir, played her violin, directed the handbell choir, and was a faithful member of the UMW.  She also filled in as organist and secretary of the church when there was illness or other reasons for their absences.  For many years, she served as the Coordinator for each Sunday and other special music programs and scheduled vocal and instrumental soloists for all services.  By the time they were appointed to Bergen Highlands Church in Upper Saddle River, N.J. where they served for 12 years to retirement, she had a very responsible position working for General Public Utilities (the owners of Three Mile Island).  She continued singing with the choir, playing her violin and enjoying having church members come to her home.

From 1994 (until her death), she lived at Lake Junaluska, NC Methodist Assembly.  For many years, she and her husband coordinated all the exterior Christmas decorating (which she continued after his death in 2010), served on many committees, and was always at hand to volunteer wherever needed.  Both she and Roger received the coveted Chief Junaluska award in 2000.  She often played the violin in her church in Waynesville.

She is survived by her daughters, Kathy McNeil (Dick Baldwin), and Bonnie Florek; grandchildren, Amy Fauvie, Eric Redmond, and Julie Eynard; great-grandchildren, Danny and Layne Darabaris, Jaycee and Eric Redmond; and brother Robert. Raymond and Richard Stryker are deceased.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Septenber 24, 2022 at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville.
