Lake Junaluska

Lake Junaluska, Margaret Lorena Smith, age 76, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 2, 2020 at Autumn Care.

A native of Haywood County, originally living in the Ratcliff Cove Community and later at Lake Junaluska, she was a daughter of the late Ben and Polly Ratcliff Smith.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Dean Smith.  Lorena graduated from Waynesville Township High School in 1961 and from Dillinghams School of Beauty in Asheville, after which she worked as a licensed beautician.  Lorena later attended Western Carolina University, and earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. She was employed by the State of North Carolina for nearly 20 years as a Social Worker.  Lorena participated in local clubs including the Business & Professional Women’s Club and Daughters of the American Colonists, Augustine Washington Chapter.  After taking early retirement due to medical reasons, she became an avid lover of flowers and landscaping and took pride in her volunteer work at the VA Hospital in Asheville, where she planted many varieties of flowers that she initially grew in her own yard at Lake Junaluska.  Lorena was a lifelong member of Elizabeth Chapel United Methodist Church and was very proud of her "Ratcliff" Heritage.

Lorena is survived by her son, Justin Asbury Ferguson (Heather) of Knoxville, Tennessee; sister, Charlotte Parker, of Waynesville; and two granddaughters, Vivianne and Mary Lloyd Ferguson; a niece and three nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2020, at Elizabeth Chapel United Methodist Church with Reverend Tim McConnell officiating.  Burial will follow at Ratcliff Cove Community Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
