Margaret Palmer

Crabtree Community, Margaret Nelson Palmer, age 91, passed away on Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at her residence.

A native of Haywood County, she was a daughter of the late Hardy and Alma Williams Nelson.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, G. C. Palmer, Jr. of 46 years, who died in 1993; a son, David Palmer; and three sisters.  Born and raised in Haywood County, Margaret Nelson Palmer was a matriarch, loving mother and grandmother.  She was a magnificent cook and a prolific canner.  Her green thumb led her to be a charter member of the Richland Garden Club and was active with the club for 30 years.  Margaret’s life centered around family and her church.  As a life-long member of Crabtree United Methodist Church, Margaret sang in the choir, blessed the congregation with her beautiful flower arrangements, and cooked countless meals for fundraisers and church families.

Margaret is survived by two daughters, Lynne Palmer Leatherwood, of Crabtree; Mary Gaye Bumgarner, and her husband, Mark, of Waynesville; son, Cecil Palmer, III, of Crabtree; six grandchildren: Susan Roberts (John Mark), Stacey Bumgarner, Riley Palmer (Kim), Montanna Palmer , Nelson Palmer and MacKenzie Lawrence (Josh); and seven great-grandchildren: Ben, Matthew, Cypress, Adaline, Will, Sarah and Charlie.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 27, 2019 at Crabtree United Methodist Church with Reverend DeVere Williams and Reverend Terry Rowland officiating.  Burial will follow at Dawn Memory Gardens.  The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
