Maggie Valley

Maggie Valley, John Wayne Halstead, age 74, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 18, 2021 at his residence.

John was a native of Indiana but has lived in Western North Carolina for the last 34 years.  He was the son of the late Kenneth Everett and Nora Mae Donica Halstead.  In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two grandsons, Justin and Jeremy Halstead.

John proudly served his country in both the Army and Marine Corps.  Prior to being drafted, John met the love of his life of 54 years, Sandra.  Upon his return, John and Sandra raised four amazing children.  John was a true gentleman and servant for the Lord.  He took his gifts as a communicator and his spirit of adventure to take infant churches and build them into flourishing congregations for the Lord.  This spirit of adventure also made him an amazing husband and father.  John was involved and interactive with his children, never shying away from an opportunity to test their limits.  Whether it was skydiving or incorporating his children in church activities, John wanted his family to experience life by doing.  His compassion and kindness touched countless individuals throughout his ministry, and he will be forever remembered as an awesome child of God.

John is survived by the love of his life, Sandra Halstead, of Maggie Valley; one daughter, Jennifer Halstead, of Maggie Valley; three sons, John Halstead II of Maggie Valley, Jody Halstead, and his wife, Tina, of Waynesville; and Jason Halstead of Flagstaff, Arizona; two sisters, Sheri Kosmicki, and her husband, Steve, and Bonnie Phelps, and her husband, Gary, all of Lakeland, Florida; one brother, Larry Halstead, and his wife, Melba, of Kentucky; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 29, 2021 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home.  The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
