John Burnett, Jr.

Waynesville

Waynesville, John Henry Burnett, Jr., age 96, passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2020 at Autumn Care.

A native of South Carolina, and a Haywood County resident since 1954, he was a son of the late John Henry and Lelia Burnett.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Annie Mae Jackson and Ethel McClenden; and two brothers, Harold and James Burnett.  John was a member of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church and was an ordained Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and sung in the choir and the men’s chorus.  He worked for the Togary on Main Street for 33 years and was a mason for over 50 years.  John served as a foster grandparent for many years and was affectionally known as Papa John.

John is survived by two sisters-in-law, a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and cousins.

A Homegoing Celebration will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2020 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Pastor Rodrick Sanders officiating.  Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 12:30 until service time at the funeral home.

The care of Mr. Burnett has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Homes.
