Joann Teague

Waynesville, JoAnn Phillips Teague, age 79, passed away on Thursday, November 26, 2020 at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A native of Jackson County, she was a daughter of the late Rasho and Elenora Cook Phillips.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Jimmy Phillips.  JoAnn was a graduate of Sylva Webster High School and received her master’s degree from Western Carolina University.  She was a member of Allens Creek Baptist Church.  JoAnn retired from Haywood County School System with 30 years of service.  She was Teacher of the Year in 1985, was guardian ad litem program volunteer in 2002 and was District Support Administrator of the 1988-1989 school year.  JoAnn was permanent honorary Chairman of the Haywood Democrat Party in 2011.

JoAnn is survived by her husband, David Hyatt; son, Stanley Pressley, of Clemson, South Carolina; and a brother, Dale Phillips, and his wife, Nancy, of Sylva.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 29, 2020 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Eddie Deitz officiating.  Burial will follow at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 28, 2020 at the funeral home. Due to Covid-19, all protocols and mandates are requested to be followed, including mask.  The service will be live streamed and will be accessible through JoAnn’s obituary on Wells Funeral Home website to facilitate the ongoing focus on community safety and health.
