October 20, 1917 — June 22, 2020

Waynesvile

Waynesville, Jane Katherine Swart Stoner, age 102, departed this earthly realm on Monday, June 22, 2020.

Born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, on October 20, 1917, as an only child to Edgar Allan and Margaret May Stutzman Swart.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Hiram Stoner, who died in 2004; sons, Jeffrey in 2013 and Ray Scott in 2018.  Jane lived in Johnstown through high school and her first two years of college at University of Pittsburgh/Johnstown campus.  She moved to Pittsburgh for her last two years of undergraduate work in 1938, graduating with a BA in Education in 1939.  Jane graduated with highest honors, majoring in English, with minors in biology and commercial education.

Jane was a pianist and took vocal lessons during her high school and early college years.  While she was in high school, she formed a vocal group  with three high school friends called "The High Hatters".  They had a radio program in the afternoon for four years.

Jane Married Ray Hiram Stoner, also from Johnstown, Pennsylvania in January of 1942.  They moved to Akron, Ohio in late 1942, where Ray worked for Goodyear Aircraft and the B.F. Goodrich Company during the war years.  Jane worked as an Executive Secretary for 20 years at MSA Corporation after her children left home for college.  When she retired in 1982, she turned her attention to sewing and other craft skills, macramé, knitting and quilting which became her passion until her vision became too poor to sew.

She is survived by a daughter, Kaaren Stoner; grand-daughter, Kelly Suzanne Stoner; and a daughter-in-law, Linda Welch Stoner.

No services or memorials are planned at this time.

As a life-long reader, her deepest disappointment was when she could no longer read.  If you wish to make a gift or memorial in her name, the Haywood County Public Library/Waynesville Branch would be the perfect choice.  Please call Zack at 828-356-2502 for instructions or mail a check to the library at 678 South Haywood Street, Waynesville, NC 28796, listing Jane Stoner memorial gift on memo line.  Fiction or non-fiction are fine.

The care of Mrs. Stoner has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Homes.
