Howard Conard

December 30, 1947 — October 8, 2021

Clyde

Howard Rowland Conard, age 73, passed away on Friday, October 8, 2021, at his home.

A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late James H. and Ruby Ford Conard.  He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Geraldine Cook and Barbara Jeannie Stephenson; four brothers, Bobby Joe, Charles Lee, Larry and Jim Conard; and infant brothers, Kenneth Lee and Lester.

Howard proudly served his country for 22 years.  He first served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam era and later served in the United States Army as a drill sergeant.  He was the first officer to work a shift with the Archdale Police Department and second officer ever hired at the department.  Howard also worked with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department.  His life was centered around three passions: his Lord, his soulmate, Donna and bluegrass music.  He enjoyed attending bluegrass festivals and Pickin’ in the Park during the spring and summer.  When winter came round, Howard would gather with his friends to jam on his banjo.  Howard was a faithful third-row member of Rocky Face Baptist Church.  It was a highlight of his week to sit and worship the Lord with Donna at church.

Howard is survived by his soulmate, Donna Smith, of Weaverville; two sisters-in-law, Neonda Conard and Janie Conard; brothers-in-law, Guy Cook and Jerry Stephenson; nephews, Dean Cook, Kenny Stephenson, Jeff, Brian and Kim Conard, Allen Conard and David Conard; and nieces, Sherrie Burch, Vicki Powers and Kelly Bell.

A funeral service will be held at Rocky Face Baptist Church at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 17, 2021, with Reverend Donnie Henson officiating.  Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.  Burial will follow the service at Old Thickety Cemetery in Clyde.

Memorials may be made to Rocky Face Baptist Church, 1635 Worley Cove Road, Canton, NC 28716.

The care of Mr. Conard has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Homes of Waynesville.
