Soddy Daisy, TN, Horace D. Townsend, MD, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, September 8, 2021 in North Carolina.

A native of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and with former residences in Tennessee, Texas, and Florida, he was a son of the late Robert William and Mabel Huffman Townsend.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, June Townsend and brother, William Townsend.  Dr. Townsend proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Lieutenant Colonel, Medical Corps, serving during the Vietnam Era.  He received The Legion of Merit Metal for distinguished service and the excellent care he provided his patients as commanding officer, 85th Evacuation Hospital, 17th Field Hospital, 55th Medical Group and 44th Medical Brigade in Vietnam.

Dr. Townsend completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Oklahoma and received his Doctor of Medicine Degree in May 1959.  He was a Surgical Resident at Womack Army Hospital, Fort Bragg, North Carolina from September 1, 1962 until August 31, 1963.  Dr. Townsend completed his Orthopedic Residency at Brooke General Hospital from September 1, 1963 until August 31, 1966 at Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam, Houston, Texas.  He received his American Orthopedic Board Certification to practice Orthopedic Surgery, January 18, 1968.  Dr. Townsend was a member of The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, March 8, 1971; and Florida Orthopedic Society, 1973.  He was one of the original founders in 1973 of LW. Blake Hospital, Bradenton, Florida and was Doctor of the Year in 1995.  Dr. Townsend gave 25 years of dedicated service to Manatee Memorial Hospital, Bradenton, Florida.

He enjoyed watching Sooner football (Boomer Sooners) , landscaping, reading and cooking (especially French cooking).  Dr. Townsend loved his family, dogs, architecture and cared deeply about his patients.  He was a beloved surgeon and had a huge heart.

Dr. Townsend died peacefully at home after years of loving care provided by his wife and children; all of whom have clinical training and expertise.

Dr. Townsend is survived by his wife of 43 years, Karen M. Townsend; two daughters, Kelly Chasteen (Allen) of Maggie Valley, NC, and Kimberly Pifer (Dave) of Soddy Daisy, TN; three sons, Greg Townsend (Shannon) of Black Mountain, NC, William Davidson (Sherri) of Bradenton, FL, and Tom Davidson, of Hixson, TN; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

His family will gather in private to celebrate his long and productive life.
