Waynesville

Waynesville, Hilda Dotson Hyatt, age 91, passed away on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at her residence.

A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Leonard Grady and Mary Noland Dotson.  In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Hyatt, and one brother, Howard Dotson.  Hilda was a member of Long’s Chapel United Methodist Church.  A beloved wife, mother and grandmother, she touched the lives of many.  As a young woman, Hilda developed a passion for music and singing.  She married her sweetheart, Allen Hyatt, and was happily together for 36 years until his untimely passing in 1984.  Upon Allen’s death, Hilda worked the lunch counter at Hazelwood Pharmacy.  She was a wonderful listener, and children gravitated to her.  Her banana pudding and biscuits were sought-after items on Hazelwood Pharmacy’s menu.  Hilda was a remarkable homemaker, who loved intentionally, and she will forever be missed.

Hilda is survived by two daughters, Elaine Hyatt Cowan, and her husband, Tom, of Asheville and J. Marlene Hyatt, of Waynesville; son George B. Hyatt, and his wife, Peggy, of Waynesville; three grandchildren, Rachel Engle (Craig), Branson Hyatt (Kaley) and Hope Cowan; and two great-granddaughters, Catherine Rose Engle and Annelise Engle.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 16, 2020 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Patrick Womack and The Reverend Joslyn Ogden Schaefer officiating.  The family will receive friends from 1:30 until service time at the funeral home.
