Lake Junaluska

Lake Junaluska, Eve King Bishop, age 61, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, May 17, 2022.

"Where ever she was, there was Eden." Mark Twain, The Diaries of Adam and Eve

Our lovely Eve Lynn King Bishop has stepped into the infinite care and love of God.  She is in a glad reunion with those who taught her how to love and laugh so well.  Her countenance and brilliant mind will be cherished by many loved ones still here.

Eve grew up in Kingsport, TN, the youngest child of five from the late John Ralph and Mickie Quillen King.  She attended the University of Tennessee and East Tennessee State University where she graduated summa cum laude with a BS degree in Elementary Education.  She had a lifelong love and vast knowledge of children literature.  She adored raising her children and grandchildren.  Whenever she was asked for her occupation, she would reply "non-invasive brain surgery" in reference to parenting and grandparenting.

Eve was married to her husband of 39 years, Jack Conrad "Chip" Bishop Jr.  They found a quote from Samuel Cowper early in marriage that expressed their love: "…For I would not have loved you half so well had I not believed you would be my friend through eternity.  For how can such a love as ours fully bloom in a nook of a life as this?"

Her beloved children are daughter Claire Suzanne Bishop Kirkpatrick and son Jack Conrad Bishop III (Grace).  She instilled generosity, honesty, a strong work ethic with room for playfulness and great joy.  Eve was so proud of them and was thrilled they chose to live nearby at Lake Junaluska.  She was a wonderful Nana for granddaughters, Melody Elizabeth Kirkpatrick, Vivian Marie Bishop and Celeste Marie Bishop.

She is survived by her sisters, Sherry (Bob Boatright) of Kingsport, TN, Mary Roe of Plano, TX, Suzi (Joe Haubenreich) of Hendersonville, TN, and brother, John King (Myra) of Kingsport, TN.  She adored all their children as treasured nieces and nephews.  Also special to Eve were her in-laws: Jack C. Bishop Sr. (Betty) of Arden, Michael Bishop (Lori) of Maryville, TN, Betsy Bishop Knox (Jack) of Tellico Plains, TN, and Kevin Bishop (Sherri) of Pickens, SC.  Again, all their children were dear to Eve as nieces and nephews.

When Eve moved to Haywood County in 1993, she immediately loved the mountains and people, especially so many gracious native Haywood County folks.  She enjoyed reading, flower gardens, summer homegrown vegetables, walks around the lake with dear friends, and sitting outside watching birds and waiting on sunsets.  She loved camping and hiking and never took for granted living in such a beautiful place.  She enjoyed extensive travels in the USA and visited 21 different countries but always loved coming home to Haywood County, saying, "Why did we bother leaving this beauty?"

Eve was an animal magnet all her life and was often surrounded and laid upon by dogs and cats when she rested.  She loved games and puzzles and jokes and laughing and dancing.  She enjoyed helping others, particularly the elderly.

Eve’s sharp wit and humor and courage was not diminished by the ALS that took her life.  She brought out the best in others throughout her life, even in the last years and months of such a terrible disease.  Her sisters, Suzi, Mary, and Sherry and her sister-in-law, Betsy Bishop Knox, were her primary caregivers during the worst of times these last months.  They were amazing.  Hospice was also a tremendous help and Eve’s family is so grateful for those caregivers, especially Stephanie Kirton.

Eve was a member of First Baptist Church of Waynesville.  Her sustaining faith was in the simplicity of listening to Jesus.  She had an intimate faith, never prayed out loud but surely did pray.  She enjoyed teaching children in church and singing in the choir.  One of her favorite hymns characterized the faith and living of her days:

Awake,  Awake to Love and Work:

1 Awake, awake to love and work!

The lark is in the sky;

The fields are wet with diamond dew;

The worlds awake to cry

Their blessings on the Lord of life,

As He goes meekly by.

2 Come, let thy voice be one with theirs,

Shout with their shout of praise;

See how the giant sun soars up,

Great lord of years and days!

So let the love of Jesus come

And set thy soul ablaze.

3 To give and give, and give again,

What God hath given thee;

To spend thyself nor count the cost;

To serve right gloriously

The God who gave all worlds that are,

And all that are to be.

Eve’s remains will be interred at the Lake Junaluska Columbarium.  A private service of gratitude and committal for Eve will be held at Lake Junaluska Memorial Chapel.
