Edward Young

Canton – Edward Andrew “Ed” Young, 74, of Kim’s Cove Road passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2020 at his residence.

A native of Pisgah, Alabama, he resided in Atlanta prior to moving to Haywood County, NC in 2003.  Ed was the son of the late Earl and Ethel Gray Young. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Arnold Young, Earnest Young, Cecil Young, John Young, Hugh Young and widowed by Judy Young.

Ed was Maintenance Manager for Cub Foods in Atlanta for 20 plus years, overseeing all maintenance for each store branch.  Ed started visiting Maggie Valley in the early 90’s and in 1992 built a vacation cabin where he and his family enjoyed weekends in the mountains. In 2003 Ed completed construction on his primary home in Maggie Valley and permanently moved to the area.  Ed focused on his lifelong love of woodworking and carpentry and started his business “Nature’s Lights” where he created one of a kind, beautiful table lamps, floor lamps, candle sticks, bowls, vases and furniture. His work was featured and sold in Galleries throughout western North Carolina and surrounding areas. Ed was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Maggie Valley, where he also worked for a time, sang in the choir, participated in the Meals on Wheels program, headed up the Billy Graham Televangelical Ministry and served his church family and community with a strong calling.

Ed is survived by his wife, Gladys Taylor Young; daughter, Renee Dalton and her husband, Mick, son, Bryan Young, daughter, Angie Buck and her husband, Kerry, son, Adam Young and his wife, Jennifer, daughter, Lisa Sanborn and her husband, Chris; brother Grant Young, sister, Jewel Blackburn and sister, Doris Pennington; Gladys’ children, Mike Taylor and his wife, Julie, Jay Taylor and his wife, Debbie, Danette Hickman and her husband, Mike; 23 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at Maggie Valley First Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Mike Odom officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall.
