Maggie Valley, Retired Senior Chief, Douglas Wayne Carver, Sr., age 72, passed away on Monday, June 8, 2020 at his residence, surrounded by his family.

A native of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Dewey M. and Mary Reagan Carver.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Martha Carver, and his son-in-law, Ronald "Ronnie" Boynton.  Douglas proudly served his country enlisting in the Navy in 1967, in the SEABEE Program as a Constructionman Apprentice, serving two tours in Vietnam he was awarded Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Commendation (Civil Actions), Vietnam Campaign Medal with fleet marine Force Combat Operations with Insignia and Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Stars.  In 1970 he transferred to the U.S. Naval Security Group, Washington, DC, where he was assigned as a pool driver; May 1974, he transferred to Naval Communications, stationed in Puerto Rico, receiving his Navy Achievement Medal; Petty Officer Carver made two deployments to Guam and received his second Achievement Medal for exemplary performance and dedication to duty.  Petty Officer Carver was selected as SEABEE of the Year for the Atlantic Fleet in May 1979 and transferred to Navy Recruiting District Washington, DC where he was awarded his third Navy Achievement Medal.  In March 1983 Chief Carver was promoted to Senior Chief; July 1983 Senior Chief reported to Civil Engineer Officer School, Port Hueneme, California and Roda, Spain.  After years of dedication to the U.S. Navy Senior Chief Carver retired May 1, 1990, from his last tour of duty at Camp David, serving under President Ronald Reagan and President George H.W. Bush.  After military retirement he was employed by Anderson Automotive  Group for 18 years in Sales and IT.  Douglas was a member of Peachtree United Methodist Church.

Douglas is survived by his wife of 52 years, Phyllis Carver; two daughters, Iris Silvers, and her husband, James, of Waynesville and Melody Perry, and her husband, Mark, of Clyde; two sons, Douglas Wayne Carver, Jr., and his wife, Mikel, of Fines Creek and Timothy Carver, and his wife, Tanya, of Waynesville; sister, Starlene Wolfe (Jeff) of Dobson, NC; four brothers, Charles Carver (Lynn) of Waynesville, Mike Carver (Linda), of Waynesville, Dewey "Butch" Carver, of California and Jimmy Darrell Carver (Bonnie), of Canton, Georgia; six grandchildren, James Isaac Silvers, Meghan Boynton, Cline Carver, Savannah Boynton, Aiden Carver and William Sutton; two step-grandchildren, Kendall and Collin Warner; and his special buddy puppy, Samson.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2020 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Jon Snyder, Reverend Erma Bond and Reverend David Reeves officiating.  Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Peachtree United Methodist Church, 307 Black Camp Gap Road, Maggie Valley, NC 28751.

The care of Retired Senior Chief, Carver has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Homes.
