David Probst

April 28, 1938 — November 1, 2019

Weaverville

David M. Probst of Weaverville NC, formerly of Waynesville NC, passed away Friday, November 1, 2019, from complications during a medical procedure at age 81.  David was preceded in death by his parents Marvin G. Probst and Lucretia Aldrich Probst, sister Monna (Probst) Densmore and brother Edward Probst.

David was born in Oak Park, IL and lived in River Forest until 1977.  He graduated from Oak Park-River Forest High School, then earned his architecture degree from his beloved University of Michigan (Go Blue!).  David joined his family's storied architectural firm Graham, Anderson, Probst & White in Chicago as a third-generation partner, serving as president of the Architect's Club of Chicago from 1972-76. Graham, Anderson, Probst & White was the successor firm to D. H. Burnham & Co and was responsible for the design of several iconic Chicago structures, including the Wrigley Building, Merchandise Mart, Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium & Civic Opera House, as well as the State Department building in Washington, DC. One of David's last architectural projects before leaving Chicago was the CNA Building.  David & Bonnie then purchased Heath Lodge in Waynesville, NC in 1979, operating the hotel for 14 seasons.

David was a quiet, gentle, loving husband, father, and grandfather with a quick, dry sense of humor.  He loved all things University of Michigan and Chicago sports and was relieved to witness his Cubs finally break their World Series curse.  He was a prolific reader, chronic tinkerer and a wonderful listener who will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by Bonnie, his wife of 49 years; daughters Julie (Dan) Fedeli & Sara Harris; son Adam Probst; and grandsons Ram Fedeli & Tag Shuck.

No funeral is planned at this time, a memorial service is planned with details to be announced later.

Should you feel so moved, donations may be made in David's name to Global Orphan Prevention (globalorphanprevention.org/donate).

The care of Mr. Probst has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Homes.
