Dane Smith

December 18, 1946 — November 18, 2022

Clyde

Dane Smith, 75, of Clyde, North Carolina passed away surrounded by his family on Friday, November 18, 2022.  Dane was born in Haywood County on December 18, 1946 to the late Ed and Sue Case Smith.

Dane grew up in Clyde and always enjoyed the outdoors.  Hunting, fishing and just exploring all the mountain land was the thing he took the most pleasure in.  Dane moved to Nashville, TN to attend Nashville Auto-Diesel College.  He was a top student at the school and graduated from there in 1966.  While there, he met and married the love of his life, Linda.  They were married for 56 years.  He soon moved back to Clyde and became the owner/operator of Midway Tire (formerly known as Midway Garage) for over 50 years.  For the past few years, he was known to all who did business with him as the “tire man.” Dane enjoyed his business and was still working up until two weeks ago.  For many years, he also had a towing and wrecker business.  He had great mechanical abilities for working on vehicles of any kind.  Dane had life-long customers who always knew who to call when they had an automotive need. Dane was a friend to many and everyone loved to hear his jokes and the tales he could spin.  He always said that all people need to know in his obituary is that “he’s dead!” The thing his family wants everyone to know, on November 6, 2022, Dane made the most important decision of his life and accepted Jesus as his Savior.  Though his family is sad that we have lost such a loving husband, father and grandfather, we are rejoicing that he is in Heaven, and we will see him again.

He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Porter Smith; daughter, Dana Smith Trull; son, Rev. Tracy Smith (Kim); grandchildren, Danelle Trull Edwards (Brian), Amy Trull Burgess (Bobby), Casey Trull (Patricia), Taylor Smith Medlin (Andrew), Tucker Smith, and Josiah Smith; great-grandchildren, Cadence Edwards, Emmy Edwards, Cohen Trull and Charlie Burgess; and numerous cousins.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 22, 2022 from 6:00pm-8:00pm at Wells Funeral Home, Canton, NC.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, November 23, 2022 in the chapel of Wells Funeral Home, Canton, NC. Pastor Tracy Smith and Pastor Tim Pullin will officiate.  Entombment will immediately follow at Crawford-Ray Memorial Gardens, Clyde, NC.
