Chase Hertel

Chase Lee Hertel, 28; passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2022, at his residence.

Chase was born on August 17, 1993 in St. Petersburg, Florida.  He lived there until he was 6 years old then moved with his family to Asheville.  As an adult, he lived in Weaverville for a couple years before moving to his current home in Hendersonville.  He worked for a few years at Applied Building Controls as an installer of control systems, working many days assisting his father who owned the business.  He also had meaningful work in the manufacturing industry.  He was an active member of the YMCA.  He attended Biltmore Church, and more recently began to establish himself and his 6 year old daughter, Chloe at First Baptist Church of Hendersonville.   He loved spending time with his family, and considered his brother Ben his best friend.  They shared similar memories of growing up together, and shared great times as adults, creating a tight brotherly bond.  Chase was a devoted father to his beloved daughter, Chloe.  He read to her, played games and did crafts with her, loved their downtown-hiking (as Chloe liked to call it) and teaching her new things.  He put her first and didn't allow distractions to intrude on their weekends together. His biggest aspiration was to teach Chloe and show her the world around her.  His proudest recent moment was attending Chloe's kindergarten graduation.  He was all smiles, and took a spot with unobstructed views of his precious girl.

Chase had special memories of time spent camping, canyoneering and mountain climbing in Utah.  When at home, he and Chloe enjoyed the companionship of their sweet cat, Basil.  He was so very kind-hearted and really valued kindness in others.

Chase had plans for his life and for Chloe.  He loved his fresh, new start in Hendersonville,  so it was a shock when unexpectedly and completely out of character, he took his life.  Although we will never fully know, his family believes that this was caused by medications that had just been prescribed to him  -  medications that both alone and in combination with others, are known to cause a person to have suicidal thoughts and act on them.  He would want his loved ones to be aware of the potential dangers of taking prescription drugs as prescribed.  He made plans for the next day, and had the things he'd need ready to go.  He would want everyone to know that certain medications can cause a suicidal shift in thinking that can come quickly and without warning.

Chase is survived by his daughter, Chloe of Hendersonville and Chloe's mother Lindsey Ellis also of Hendersonville; his parents, Douglas and Deda Hagen Hertel, of Fairview, NC; a brother, Benjamin Hertel of Boone, NC; his maternal grandmother Janis Taylor of Bonita Springs, FL; his paternal grandmother Jane Hertel of Kaukauna, WI; grandparents Marlowe and Marilyn Taylor of Nashville, TN; and a host of important aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on August 27, 2022 at Biltmore Church East, 801 Fairview Rd., Asheville, NC 28803. Refreshments will be served immediately following the service. Please RSVP to: memorialforchasehertel@gmail.com
