Carl Shook

September 7, 1945 — March 23, 2021

Candler

Carl W. Shook, Jr., 75 of Candler passed away on Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at his residence.  A native of Buncombe County, he was son of the late Carl W. Shook, Sr. and Ruth Barnes Shook.

Mr. Shook proudly served in the US Army during the Korean conflict and had been employed with Gerber Foods.  Carl was an amazing husband, father and Papaw.  His favorite time of the year was fall.  As soon as the leaves began to change, Carl and Michael loaded up the truck and headed to Georgia to their deer camp.  Carl rarely missed an opportunity to hunt, even taking his granddaughter on several occasions.  He also enjoyed attending the F-150 truck shows in Gatlinburg with Mary Jane.  Many of Carl’s neighbors entrusted him with their broken lawn equipment.  After fixing several lawn mowers, Carl was affectionately referred to as the “Mechanic of Curtis Creek”.  He took his job as a Papaw very seriously.  With his one and only granddaughter, Brandy, Papaw would shuttle her to barrel races all over North Carolina and Tennessee.  Making sure to be her loudest cheerleader in the stands.  As a great-Papaw, Carl cherished his time in the mornings with his sweet Weston.  One of their favorite past times was watching Paw Patrol together, with Weston sitting on his lap.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Mary Jane Shook; son, William Michael Shook of Candler; two sisters, Fay Brown of Asheville and Linda Blankenship and her husband, Roger of Knoxville, TN; granddaughter, Brandy Shook; great-grandson, Weston James Wilson; aunt, Jean Sherlin of Asheville and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, March 29, 2021 at Wells Chapel of Faith, 1 Chapel of Faith Dr., Candler, NC 28715, with the Reverend James Walker officiating.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the Wells Chapel of Faith.  Military rites will be provided by the North Carolina National Guard.

The care of Mr. Shook has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Candler and an online memorial register is available at “obituaries” at www.wellsfuneralhome.com
