Candler – James Floyd “Jim” Mackey, 74, passed away on Thursday, September 16, 2021 at Mission Memorial Campus.

Jim was a native of Haywood County and a son of the late Lemuel G. “Mohawk” Mackey and Janet Harkins Mackey.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Addie Burr and Floyd Mackey.  Jim was a member of the last graduating class of Clyde High School and a 1981 graduate of Haywood Community College.  He was a United States Navy veteran having served in Vietnam and was a captain at the Haywood County Sheriff’s Department.  Jim also was the Western Regional Training Coordinator for the 31 western counties at Southwestern Community College in Franklin.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Ogle Mackey; one daughter, Jennifer Mackey of Candler; a son, Jeff Mackey (Renee’) of Maggie Valley; one sister, Peggy Green of Clyde; one brother, Fred Mackey of Myerstown, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous adopted grandchildren who called him “Pappy”.

There will be a graveside memorial service at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 21, 2021 at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with the Reverend Jeff King officiating.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:30 p.m. on Monday evening at Wells Funeral Home in Canton.  Members of the Haywood County Sheriff’s Department will serve as honorary pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Haywood County Flood Relief, Faith Community Church, c/o Helping Haywood, 289 Industrial Park, Waynesville, NC  28786.
