Betty Mcelroy

Waynesville, Betty Sue McElroy, 78, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2019 at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late David Carson and Mamie Leatherwood Hannah.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, James R. McElroy; and two brothers, Grady and Ray Hannah.

She retired from Harris County, Texas as a payroll specialist and was a member of Alta Vista Baptist Church in Pasadena, Texas.  Betty was an avid member of the Lady Bug Club where she enjoyed crafting, quilting and fund raising for the church.  She loved spending time with her family.

She is survived by a daughter, Julia M. Lanning and husband, Rick, of Waynesville; a son, James R. McElroy, Jr. of Houston, Texas; two brothers, Verlin Hannah of Waynesville and LeRoy Hannah of Clyde; six grandchildren, Ricky Lanning and wife, Karen, Israel Lanning and wife, Katie, Stephanie Morgan and husband, Jared, Michelle Higdon and husband, Heath, James V. and David McElroy; and six great-grandchildren, Isaac, Chase, Mason, Ross, Hailey and Courtney.

A private celebration of life for her family will be held at a later date.
