Arnold Howell

December 30, 1923 — July 7, 2021

Lake Junaluska

Lake Junaluska, Paul Arnold Howell, Sr. age 97, passed away on Wednesday, July 7, 2021, peacefully at home on White Dogwood Lane, Lake Junaluska.

A native of Moulten, Iowa, Arnold and his mother and siblings moved to Orlando, Florida when he was 17 years old, and he spent a good portion of his life there before moving to Lake Junaluska in his later years.  It was fitting that he ended his mortal journey in Lake Junaluska, a place he described as a "Methodist Mecca where a religious overtone prevails the year around."  He was the son of the late Paul Howell and Geneva Cox Howell and was also preceded in death by his wife of 64 years Joyce Dingley Howell; sisters, Pauletta Howell Goodson, and Evelyn Howell Shelton; and brothers, Devere, Cloyd and David.

He served as a military policeman in the United States Army in World War II.  Arnold graduated from Rollins College and was a Certified Public Accountant in Colley, Trumbower & Howell until it was purchased by Coopers & Lybrand.  At one time or another, Arnold held most of the lay positions in the Methodist Church.  He was a proud member of Rotary.  Arnold was a volunteer throughout his life and, after he retired, he devoted his time to multiple volunteer activities, including distributing meals on wheels, preparing taxes for the elderly, tutoring college students in accounting, acting as a child advocate and serving as a court mediator. Arnold attended First United Methodist Church of Waynesville.

Arnold is survived by one daughter, Patricia "Trish" Anne Howell of Lake Junaluska; two sons, Paul A. Howell, Jr. and his wife, Charlette, of Atlanta, Georgia and John Norman Howell of Oviedo, Florida; two sisters, Nadine Howell Fountain and Kay Howell Shaffer; two grandchildren, Paul Arnold "Trey" Howell, III and Patricia Lynlee Howell Bradley, and her husband, Austin; and two great-grandchildren, Dallas Flynt Bradley and Amelia Cooper Bradley.
