Winfred Richard Wright, Jr.

Winfred Richard Wright, Jr. passed away peacefully at his residence on January 29, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 9, 1942, in Haywood County.


Winfred had a fulfilling career and dedicated 30 years of his to Dayco, where he worked in assembly before retiring. His commitment and hard work were evident throughout his professional journey. In addition to his successful career, Winfred served his country with great pride and honor. He was a Staff Sergeant with the United States Army and he also served in the National Guard. Winfred's military service spanned several important periods in history, including the Korean War, Vietnam War, and Operation Desert Storm. Outside of work and military service, Winfred had a variety of hobbies and interests that brought him immense joy. He treasured spending time with his family, especially his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Whether it was fishing trips or family gatherings, Winfred cherished these moments dearly. He also enjoyed cooking delicious meals for his loved ones and expressing himself through art by painting.


Winfred is preceded in death by his father, Winfred Wright Sr., his mother Myrtle Middleton Wright, and his beloved wife Nancy Kay Pruett Wright who passed away in 2015. He is also preceded in death by his sister Peggy Wood.


He leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth that will be forever cherished by his surviving family members and friends. Winfred is survived by his daughter, Lynette Wright; two sons, Jason Wright and Travis Wright; two sisters, Laura Wood and Ann Owen; two grandchildren, Ashley Wright Stokley (William) and Eli Wright (fiancée Ashley); as well as six great-grandchildren.


To honor Winfred's life and celebrate the memories they shared with him, a visitation will take place on Saturday, February 3, 2024, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m.. Both events will be held at Allens Creek Baptist Church, located at 549 Allens Creek Rd, Waynesville, NC. Winfred's final resting place will be Green Hill Cemetery with Military Honors following the services at the church. 


The care of Mr. Wright has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
