Wilma Jean Young Boone

Wilma Jean Boone, 87, of Canton passed away on Friday, October 20, 2023, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.  A native of Buncombe County, she was the daughter of the late Willis Eugene and Bertha Adelide Moore Young. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband John Nelson Boone in June, 2000 and granddaughters, Micah Raelyn Boone and Angel Stamey.

Jean was a fun-loving gal who was always on the move. Growing up at Canton First United Methodist Church, she loved the church family, and it was there she met her husband, John. She enjoyed singing in the choir and led circle meetings of United Methodist Women. She never wavered in her belief in Jesus and here lately was more than ready to go see him.

When the Title One Teacher Assistant program began at Haywood County Schools, she and her friend Rita began working there.  That is where she formed many lifelong friendships.

John and Jean traveled the US, Canada, Mexico and Hawaii together.  After his passing, her travels continued. Shopping, socializing, visiting and just keeping the roads hot were her favorite pastimes and she did them well.

Jean was a beautiful woman; she loved her family and kept a beautiful home.  She loved to dance, from the days of American Bandstand and on.  She and Sally Burns loved the Shag Club and she always regretted that John had no rhythm!

A caring mom and grandmom, helping raise three generations of kids, her children are forever indebted to her love and care over the years. She loved pretty things and was always generous in gifting others with them. Jean always made good memories with all of them. She was one of a kind, a dandy girl who will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Boone of Waynesville; two sons, Stephen Boone and his wife, Pat of Hendersonville and Deven Boone and his wife, Lisa of Waynesville; sister, Shirley Henry of Clyde; grandchildren, Jason Haley, Anna Haley, Jocie Queen, Tyler Boone, Lyndsie Boone, Aaron Ellzey, Crystal Ellzey, Thea Boone, Johnathan Boone and Walker Boone and great-grandchildren, Lelia Haley, Austin Shaw, Boone Haley, Elizabeth Haley, David Queen, Abigail Queen, Braylon Boone, Charlie Beth Boone, Colby Sexton and Alijah Stamey.

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at First United Methodist Church of Canton with Reverend Gordon Pike, Reverend James Marsh and Reverend Clay J. Morgan officiating.  Burial will follow at Crawford Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service, beginning at 1:30 p.m.

The care of Mrs. Boone has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Homes of Canton and an online memorial register is available at “Obituaries” at www.wellsfuneralhome.com.
