William Sutton

Waynesville-William Eugene "Gene" Sutton, age 78, of Kentucky Avenue, passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2012 at Mission Hospitals-Memorial Campus. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Ervin and Addie Mae Smith Sutton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters; Verndena Hayes and Vertie Stamey; and four brothers, Waldo, Charlie, Norvel and Jessie Sutton. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran. Gene was a mountain man and his favorite past time was digging ginseng and fishing the mountain streams of Western North Carolina. He is survived by a sister, Mae Miney of Waynesville; three nephews; Dan Haynie and his wife, Gayle of Georgia, Jerry Stamey and his wife, Barbara of Canton and Steve Stamey and his wife, Kathy of Waynesville; and two nieces, Dorothy Volner of Michigan; and Jessie Lee Thibadou of Waynesville. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at Green Hill Cemetery with Reverend Mike Leslie officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. In case of inclement weather please call the funeral home.
