William Jeff Smathers

William Jeff Smathers, 61, of Canton passed away on Friday, November 17, 2023, at his residence.  A native of Canton, he was the son of Rosemary Smathers Garren of Canton and the late Willie Roe Smathers.  In addition to his father, he is also preceded in death by his sisters, Linda Smathers Messer and Beverly Smathers Jones.

Jeff was a 1982 graduate of Pisgah High School.  He was a skilled welder and a member of Dutch Cove Baptist Church. Jeff was passionate about the outdoors, spending countless hours fishing and hunting.

In addition, his mother, Rosemary, he is survived by his sister, Mary Ann Smathers Greene of Canton; brother, Phillip Smathers of Canton and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Roy Houston officiating. Burial will follow at Morning Star Community Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
