Waynesville – William “Bill” Hampton Choate, Sr, 95, passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2023.
William was a born in Salisbury, North Carolina and was the son of the late Dr. James Walter Choate and Dorothy Collins Choate. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marion Howell Choate, who died in 2022; and a son, William Hampton Choate, Jr. Bill and his wife were the owners and operators of Winngray Campground and member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church. He received his bachelor’s degree in Biology at Catawba College. Bill loved making wine, especially blackberry wine, and being at the beach and outdoors.
He is survived by a daughter-in-law, Michelle Choate, of Hilton Head, South Carolina; and four grandsons, William “Tripp” Hampton Choate, III (Carlin Robertson), of Charlotte, Dylan David Choate, of Asheville, Beau Mark Choate, of Greensboro, and Pre Ellis Choate, of Greenville, South Carolina.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at Shady Grove United Methodist Church with the Reverend Sharon Davis and Reverend David Duncan officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shady Grove United Methodist Church, 3570 Jonathan Creek Road, Waynesville, NC 28785 or to Haywood County Meals on Wheels, 157 Paragon Parkway, Suite 300, Clyde, NC 28721.
The care of Mr. Choate has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Homes of Waynesville.
