Waynesville, Wendell Grant "Bucky" Woods, age 71, passed away on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at Mission Memorial Campus after a brief illness.
A native of Sylva, he was the son of the late Charles and Stella Stewart Woods. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Belva Shuler; and four brothers, Marvin, Jimmy, Bruce and Lewis Woods. Bucky graduated from Sylva Webster High School (now Smoky Mountain High School) in 1969, where he was a member of honor society and played center for the basketball team. He proudly served in the United States Navy as an electronics technician for six years before returning to the mountains he loved.
He was currently employed by Holland Laserwash car wash. Bucky was a lumber inspector and carpenter by trade, he had worked for Hennessee Lumber Company, Hammermill Lumber Company, Biltmore Hardwoods and Oaks Unlimited as well as for his brother Thad, several times. He enjoyed deer hunting, he never killed anything but sure enjoyed spending time with his brothers, nephews and friends. Bucky was smart, if you asked him what time it is, he could tell you how to build a clock.
Bucky is survived by his wife of 44 years, Patri Byers Woods, of Waynesville; two sisters, Brenda Mills (Jack) and Linda Brown; two brothers, Thad Woods (Lee) and Barry Woods (Debbie); several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 22, 2022 at his home. Everyone who knew and loved Bucky is invited to attend.
The care of Mr. Woods has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
