Wanda Marie Lurvey, 72, passed away on Monday, September 7, 2026. A native of North Miami, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Emma Bagley Hammerschmidt. While living in Miami, she was a financial banker. Wanda loved the mountains and made Maggie Valley her home for 30 years. For over 15 years she served as the Deputy Tax Collector for the Town of Canton; being named Employee of the Year in 2025.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Brandon Lurvey; grandma, Mary Bagley, and brother, Michael Hammerschmidt.

She is survived by her sister, Rusty Nyborg; nephews, Sal Price, David and Mark Hammerschmidt, and Jay Hartin; daughter, Debbie Lurvey; son, Daniel Lurvey; granddaughters, Danielle Janicki, Dana Greene, and Kala Lurvey; grandson, Aaron Lurvey, and cousins, Brendan McGovern, Teresa Horgan, and Karen Dell.

The family will receive friends on Monday, September 21st at 2:00pm followed by a Celebration of Life in the chapel of Wells Funeral Home, Canton at 3:00pm.
