Walter B. Mather, III

Walter Bentley Mather, III passed away peacefully on November 2, 2023 in Waynesville, NC at the age of 91.  He was a devoted and loving husband to his wife of nearly 60 years, Peggy Askew Mather.  He missed her greatly since her death in 2015.

Walter was born in Hartford, CT.  He joined the United States Air Force where he achieved the rank of a Staff Sergeant and became a decorated veteran of the Korean War.  He later moved to St. Petersburg, FL where he met and married the love of his life, Peggy.  He completed his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florida and later moved to the Carolinas where he pursued a career in the textile industry earning several patents.  Walter and Peggy moved to Waynesville in 1993 where they enjoyed a wonderful retirement.  Walter was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Walter is survived by his two sons, Walter Bentley Mather, IV "Casey" (Karen) and Michael Thomas Mather (Debbie); three grandchildren, Walter B. Mather, V "Quent", Katharine O. Mather, and Thomas A. Mather (Tawnya) and their sons, Carder and Austin; one brother, Larry; and four special nieces.

The family wishes to thank Marie Edwards and Sherry Moore for their special and loving care during Walter’s later life, as well as the many kind professionals at Haywood Regional Medical Center and Four Seasons Hospice for their comforting and gentle end of life care.

Per his wishes, Walter will be cremated with no formal services.

The care of Mr. Mather has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
