Walter Wilson Davis, 94 and a resident of Maggie Valley, passed away on Tuesday, September 20, 2022.
Born in Eau Claire, Pennsylvania, he was the oldest of the Daryl and Mary Davis’s five sons. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy and two of his brothers.
After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, he returned to the States to marry his fiancée and start a family. Encouraged by Dorothy to continue his education, he eventually earned his PHD and served as a professor of history, first at the University of Arizona, and then later at Oral Roberts University and Regent University. Over the course of time, he wrote three history books. Walter was a member with his second wife, Joan at First Baptist Church of Maggie Valley.
He is survived by his wife of eleven years, Joan Burgess Davis; a son, Doug Davis, and his wife, Cheryl; a daughter, Patty Felder, and her husband, Richard; two brothers; Jim Davis and Ralph Davis; ten grandchildren; and twenty-two great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 25, 2022, in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home. Private burial will follow at the Western North Carolina State Veteran’s Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Area Pregnancy Services of Haywood County, 177 N. Main Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
The care of Mr. Davis has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
