Obituary

With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Walter Eugene Bailey, Jr., who left us on July 13, 2026, in the city that shaped his days—Asheville, North Carolina. Born on January 21, 1950, also in Asheville, Walter was a steady and compassionate presence for those fortunate enough to know him. He passed away peacefully at the Charles George VA Medical Center, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, quiet strength, and unwavering love for his family.

Walter’s journey carried him through many seasons, all rooted in the mountains of North Carolina. Throughout his 76 years, he embodied devotion to family, to friends, and to the principles he cherished. He shared a bond of brotherhood with Gary Bailey and Chris Bailey, and his wisdom and gentle encouragement enriched the lives of his nephews: Dwayne (Karen) and their son Uriah, Scott (Brooke), and Warren Bailey. His friendship with Bosco Lowe stood as a testament to Walter’s loyalty and the effortless warmth he brought into every relationship.

The Bailey family mourns not only the loss of Walter but also remembers those who went before him. His father, Walter Eugene Bailey, Sr., his mother, Lois Elizabeth Waycaster Bailey; his dear sister Jeanne Elizabeth Cox, beloved great-nephew Elam Bailey; and sister-in-law, Elma Joyce Bailey are each held dear in memory, their stories continuing in the legacy Walter now leaves behind.

All who knew Walter recall a man who was both humble and steadfast. His roots ran deep in Asheville, and he embraced the community with a quiet spirit—offering support, a steady hand, and a welcoming smile to friends old and new. He leaves an indelible mark not only as a treasured brother, uncle, and friend but as an inspiration to show compassion in every moment, to listen deeply, and to live with integrity. His relief efforts for the survivors, especially the children, of Hurricane Helene remain a testament to his big heart and commitment to his community.

Mr. Bailey served in the United States Air Force as a radar technician in the Pacific, and his skills continued into his employment as an engineer with Hilton in Hawaii. He loved playing baseball, and his team had gone on to win division championship. His childhood was filled with wonderful memories with his family and friends. He enjoyed singing karaoke, and all things racing, from short track to dirt track. His life led him through many adventures and travels throughout the United States, where he undoubtedly found new friends to strike up a conversation with.

To honor the life and legacy of Walter Eugene Bailey, Jr., a graveside service will be held on Monday, July 20, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 1 Chapel of Faith Dr, Candler, NC 28715 with Chaplain Jeremiah Richards officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by members of Shaw Air Force Base and Haywood County VFW. Family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by Walter are warmly invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of his life.

Though Walter has departed from our sight, the love and lessons he shared remain a guiding light for all who loved him. His memory will endure in stories told, in the laughter and kindness of his family, and in the gentle hope he inspired that carries on in Asheville and beyond.
