Virgil Lee Meadows

Virgil Lee Meadows, 86, of Candler passed away on Wednesday, December 20, 2023.

Virgil Lee Meadows Sr (aka Mr. Nice Guy) of Candler passed away December 20th after a brief illness. Heaven has gained a hero, peacemaker and survivor.

In addition to his parents, Virgil and Meekie Meadows, Virgil was predeceased by his wife of almost 64 years, Margaret Regina Rathbone Meadows; his son, Virgil Lee Meadows, Jr.; brothers, John Scott Meadows, Sr, Jack Lewis Meadows, Thomas Willis Meadows, Michael Charles Meadows; and sister, Sarah Ann Meadows Smith.

Virgil is survived by his daughter, Janet Elaine Meadows, of the home, his dog Scarlett, cats, Sadie and Diamond.  Virgil is also survived by his brother, Theodore Meadows (wife Earlene) of Shallotte, N.C. and sister, Georgia Woody (husband Norris) of Woodfin, N.C.

Virgil was member of Hominy Baptist Church in Candler. Proudly served in U.S Marine Corps from 1955-1959. He retired from BASF after 38 years of service.  Virgil was a strong man of faith. His faith in God guided him through many tragedies and triumphs in life. Virgil received one of the first heart by passes at age 44 just 10 months after the tragic loss of his son.   At age 79 he received a relatively new procedure of replacing his aortic valve with an artificial valve through a vein in his leg without that procedure he only had 18 months to live.  In the last 8 years with just 35% of his heart working Virgil cared for his wife who was chronically ill and continued to fight for and support his daughter Janet with her lifetime battle against discrimination.  Virgil was always a peacemaker and hero and the ultimate survivor.  He was also an extraordinary man of faith.  He was the best father and hero a daughter could ask for.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 26, 2023 in Wells Chapel of Faith in Candler with Reverend Melissa Hughes and Reverend Paul Raybon officiating.  The family will receive friends at the chapel beginning at 12:30 p.m. until service time.  Interment will follow the service at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
