Thomas Richard Wertenberger

Hendersonville, Thomas Wertenberger, age 78, peacefully passed away on Monday, November 13, 2023 at his home.

 

A native of Ohio, Tom is the son of the late Richard and Lucy Kauffman Wertenberger. 

 

He spent two tours in Vietnam serving in the United States Army.  He served his country proudly and will be remembered for his service.

 

Tom and his loving wife owned and operated Squire Watkins Inn in Dillsboro for 35 years.  He enjoyed fishing, going to performances at the Flat Rock Playhouse and good food.  Most of all he loved his grandchildren and family.

 

Tom is survived by his wife of 57 years, Emma Raff Wertenberger; one son, Tom Wertenberger (Simone); one brother, Gary Wertenberger (Jeanine); two grandchildren, Sofia and Ellis Wertenberger, as well as many extended family members across the country. 

 

Military honors will be rendered at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, November 20, 2023, at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Black Mountain, NC.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to American Cancer Society,  P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD  21741.

 

The care of Mr. Wertenberger has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
