Thelma Buchanan

Waynesville, Thelma Wilkes West Buchanan, age 97, passed away on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at Autumn Care of Waynesville.

Thelma was born August 30, 1920 in Jackson County and resided in Jackson and Haywood County most of her life. She was the daughter of the late John and Talitha Haskett Wilkes. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, James W. West, Sr.; second husband, Lester Buchanan; daughters, Betty Sue West and Phyllis West McGaha; sister, Mildred Davis; and brother, Alden Wilkes. Thelma retired from Dayco Corporation and enjoyed gardening, fishing and tubing the river. She was a faithful servant to the Lord and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Cullowhee.

Thelma is survived by her son, James W. West, Jr. and his wife, Wanda, of Waynesville; two sisters, Alma Webb and Sue Ward; two brothers, Aileene Wilkes and Raymond Wilkes; three grandchildren, Greg West, Jamie West Culbreth and Michele McGaha Robertson; five great-grandchildren, Hannah Culbreth, Abby and Emily West, Devon and Tristen Robertson; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 13, 2018 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Darrell Webb and Reverend Jared Stevens officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
