Ted Sawyer, Jr.

Clyde - Ted Sawyer, Jr., 60, passed away on Friday, June 29, 2018 at Charles George VA Medical Center Hospice in Asheville.

A native of San Francisco, California, he was a son of the late Ted Sawyer and the late Olga S. Taeatafa. Ted received a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Industrial Technology from Western Carolina University. He faithfully served our nation in the United States Marine Corps for six years in Special Operations and later continued his service in the United States Army with the 5th Special Forces Group at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. Ted also served as an Assistant Scout Master in Boy Scouts of America, Troop #333 and assisted five young men in obtaining their rank of Eagle Scout with one of the honored scouts being his son, Duke. Ted retired from Evergreen Packaging with ten years of service and served as a member of the company's ERT and Swift Water Rescue Team. He was also formerly employed by Charles D. Owen Manufacturing for four years. Ted was a loving husband, father, "Papaw" and brother.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Laura Worsham Sawyer; two sons, Ryan Christopher McCracken (Erika) of Waynesville and Duke Garrett Sawyer (Eva) of Hunt Valley, Maryland; one sister, Ada Sawyer of San Diego, California; six brothers, Chris Sawyer of Jacksonville, Florida, Tim Sawyer of San Diego, California, Duke Sawyer of Temecula, California, Ronnie and Robert Tuatagaloa, both of San Diego, California, and Dennis Taeatafa of Pago Pago American Samoa; and one grandson, Aiden Lewis McCracken.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 6, 2018 at West Canton Baptist Church with the Reverend Jonathan Blaylock officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at Wells Funeral Home of Canton.
