Sybil Ann Breece

Sybil Roberts Breece, beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away Saturday, October 7, 2023.  In her final days she was surrounded by family and friends.

Sybil was preceded in her death by her husband, Newton Breece, in 2020, and her parents Minor and Alma Phillips Roberts.

She was born September 26, 1935, in Kershaw, SC.  Sybil grew up in South Carolina and graduated from Mt Pisgah High School.  Following high school, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia where she graduated from Creighton Business school, and then worked for Bell South.  While living in Atlanta in 1955, she met our dad, Newton Breece, married and moved to Clyde, NC, where they raised one daughter and three sons.  Their home sits prominently on a hill with a magnificent view of the mountains.  She would get up early and stay up late to care for us.  She also attended as many activities with us as possible.  If you ask us, we all have hundreds of stories to share about our Mom.  She made each one of us feel special.

Sybil worked as a legal secretary for many years for Mr. Ed Thornhill.  She then worked for Dr. Bill Owen as his medical secretary until her retirement.

Sybil was an active member of First Baptist Church of Clyde, NC, and loved all her friends in her Sunday School class.  She was also a member of the Red Hat Society for many years and enjoyed the activities with the other Red Hat ladies.

Sybil loved the beach and had been there many summers with her parents and family growing up.  Her last trip to the beach was October 2020, with her children.  She would have probably stayed at the beach if she had been in better health.

Sybil would sit for hours working on jigsaw puzzles and included all her family at some time to help.  She also enjoyed reading and had a few favorite TV shows she never missed, such as General Hospital, Jeopardy, and Wheel of Fortune.

She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Ledbetter and her husband, Steve of Cleveland, TN; three sons, Charles Breece and his wife Rita Caldwell Breece of Anderson, SC, Harold Breece of Candler, NC, and Michael Breece and his wife Rita King Breece of Taylors, SC; five grandchildren, Alexander Breece and his wife, Ayla, Ashley McCabe and her husband, Jimmy, Paul Ledbetter, Jennifer Ramsey and her husband, Brian, and Stefanie Kauffman; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Wells Funeral Home of Canton.  Following the visitation, a Graveside Service for family and friends will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park with the Reverend Dr. David Phillips officiating.

A special thanks to her caregivers, Linda Woods and Sherrye Rhodes, and all of our family that made her last three years pleasant for her to be in her home.  Special thanks to the nurses on the 4th floor and Hospice Care Group at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

The care of Mrs. Breece has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Canton and an online memorial register is available at “Obituaries” at www.wellsfuneralhome.com.
