Swann Mickey McClure, Jr.

Swann Mickey McClure, Jr., beloved farrier and horse enthusiast, passed away on August 9, 2023, at Swain Memorial Hospital. He was born in Haywood County on August 18, 1946, to his loving parents, Swann McClure and Bessie Moody. 

Mickey led a fulfilling life dedicated to his passion for horses. For the past 20 years, he worked as a talented farrier, skillfully taking care of horses' hooves. Additionally, he was able to fulfill a lifelong dream by delivering horses across the country. His love for these magnificent animals extended beyond his career.

One of Mickey's proudest accomplishments was being crowned the Bronco Busting Champion of Cow Town, New Jersey in 1969. It was a testament to his exceptional horsemanship skills and unwavering determination.  Throughout the Southeast, Mickey also showcased his expertise as a horse judge and participant in horse shows. His wealth of knowledge and keen eye earned him the respect and admiration of fellow enthusiasts.

Mickey's memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him dearly. He will be deeply missed by his three beloved daughters: Yvette McClure, Marcia McClure, and Barbara Roberts, and her husband Charles. They were a source of immense joy and pride in Mickey's life.

He is also survived by five sisters: Barbara Henderson, Dolores Page, Hazel Robinson, and her husband Barry, Ruth Burleson, Kathy Howell; two brothers: Dennis McClure and B.J. McClure; two grandchildren: Brian Davis, and his wife Casey and Amanda Hopper, and her husband, James; as well as four great-grandchildren, Raegan, Ford, Mason, and Cameron; and several loved nieces and nephews.  Their cherished memories with Mickey will forever hold a place in their hearts.

In addition to his parents, Mickey was preceded in death by his second mother, “Mama” Ruby McClure, and two brothers, Bobby, and Swann Lee McClure. 

Friends always looked up to Mickey as a warm-hearted and generous individual. His love for horses was contagious, and he shared his passion with everyone he encountered. Mickey's dedication to his craft and the joy he brought to others will be remembered as his enduring legacy.

Family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by Mickey are invited to attend a celebration of life on August 26, 2023. The service will take place at Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services - Waynesville, located at 296 North Main Street, Waynesville, NC 28786. The celebration of life will begin at 2:00 PM and conclude at 4:00 PM, providing an opportunity for loved ones to come together and celebrate Mickey's remarkable life.

In honor of Mickey McClure Jr., let us remember him as a dedicated farrier, a horse lover extraordinaire, and a compassionate soul.  In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to STAR Ranch Rescue, 970 Rabbit Skin Road, Waynesville, NC 28785.
