Shirley Y. Henry passed away on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on May 31, 1941, to the late Eugene Willis "Willie" and Bertha Moore Young. Shirley is also preceded in death by her loving husband of 43 years, Thomas Henry, who departed in 2014, and a sister Wilma Jean Boone.
Shirley's educational journey was marked by her graduation from King's College, where she earned a Secretarial Degree. In her professional career, Shirley made notable contributions as an Executive Secretary with Mountain Builders and dedicated 30 years to Clyde Savings Bank, later known as Home Trust Bank, where she was a banker. Her warm presence and unwavering commitment to her work left a lasting impact on her colleagues and clients alike.
She channeled her skills and creativity not only in her career but also through her artistic pursuits, including ceramics and painting. Family was exceptionally important to Shirley. She took great joy in watching her daughter, Leigh, grow and thrive in sports and various activities throughout the years. Shirley cherished many memories, particularly those spent camping and cheering passionately for the University of North Carolina basketball team.
A lifelong and active member of the Canton First United Methodist Church, Shirley's involvement extended beyond typical membership. She served as the Choir Director and led the youth ministry alongside her husband, Thomas Henry. Together, they created a nurturing environment for the church community.
Left to cherish her memories are her daughter, Leigh Marsh (Rev. James Marsh); her grandchildren, Brandon Marsh (Naryha) and Lizzie Marsh, and her great-granddaughter, Haven Marsh. Shirley also shared a special bond with her niece, Deborah Boone, and her nephews, Steve Boone and Deven Boone and a special best friend, Hazel Morgan.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 2, 2025, at Canton First United Methodist Church with Reverand Gordon Pike officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service at Crawford Ray Memorial Gardens.
