Sylva - Shirley Spencer Haney (though most knew him as "Bud") passed in peace Thursday, March 01, 2018 at the age of 79. Born June 27, 1938 in Haywood County, he married his wife Sarah Jameson in 1960. Buncombe County was home where they raised their two daughters, Chérie and Mariea. After retirement they moved to Jackson County. Bud was fortunate to have made many friends during his working years. He first worked at Finkelstein's Pawn Shop in downtown Asheville. He then had the opportunity to work at American Enka (BASF) and stayed there until his retirement 33 years later. During his time at American Enka, he joined their Fire Department which later grew into the Enka-Candler Fire Department. He first volunteered as a fireman and after his retirement became the Fire Chief. He held this post for 7 years. Bud's passion continued even after his move to Jackson County. He volunteered at the Cullowhee Fire Department and became a certified CPR instructor teaching through Southwestern Community College for many years. Bud was a lifelong outdoorsman and took advantage of the beautiful mountains in which he called home. He loved to fly fish with his dad and you could find him most weekends camping with his family in the Cataloochee Valley. He enjoyed spending time at the lake and was a skilled water-skier. He passed his love of the outdoors along to his daughters. Those that knew Bud could always find him whistling his favorite tune or dancing his own jig. He loved country music (only the oldies mind you) and was a fan of westerns or anything John Wayne. A creature of habit, he started each day with a breakfast of eggs, applesauce and toast. Lunch would typically consist of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich plus a ham and cheese sandwich which affectionately became known as a 'papaw sandwich' by his granddaughters. He would always end the day with a bowl of either butter pecan or strawberry ice cream. Bud was blessed with the ability to eat anything he pleased and never gain an ounce of weight.
He was preceded in death by his parents Millard and Selma Haney and brother Billy Haney.
He leaves Sarah, his wife of 57 years; two daughters and sons-in-law: Chérie and Steve Bowers, Mariea and Mike Keezel; Two granddaughters, Laura Bowers and Lindsay Bowers and step-grandson, Aaron Keezel; Sisters Dot (Ross) Peebles and Bobbi (Bob) Ray; Sister-in-law, Linda Haney and many other relatives and close friends.
