Sarah Mcconnell

Waynesville, Sarah Elizabeth Dumas McConnell, age 94, passed away on Monday, May 21, 2018 at her residence.

A native of Irwin County, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late James Hill Dumas and Bertha Jones Dumas. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Lewis D. McConnell who died in 1986; a brother, Hill Dumas. Sarah was very active in her early years in churches that her husband pastored. She was a teacher in Georgia prior to moving to Haywood County where she taught for a total of 30 years, retiring in 1986. Sarah was a member of Francis Cove United Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching, reading, especially her Bible, and writing letters to her family and friends.

Sarah is survived by her daughter, Della Purvis, and her husband, Buddy, of Georgia; two sons, Buddy McConnell, and his wife, Sherry, of Florida and Reverend Tim McConnell, and his wife, Debbie, of Lake Junaluska; eight grandchildren, Michael Belue (Amanda), Leah Mehaffey (David), Kevin and Scott Purvis, Heath McConnell (Samatha), Daniel McConnell (Shannon), Heidi Nolte (Erik) and David Avera (Rhonda); seventeen great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 25, 2018 at Francis Cove United Methodist Church with Reverend David Childers officiating. Burial will follow at Fines Creek United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:30 until 1:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
