Sam Taylor Smathers, 88, of Tampa, Florida, passed away on Thursday, April 10, 2025. Born on April 6, 1937, in Canton, North Carolina, Sam lived a full and meaningful life defined by service, adventure, and hard work.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley Smathers; his parents, Luther Ledford Smathers and Olive Julia Smathers; his siblings, David, Stuart, and Mae Myrtle. Their memories remained dear to him throughout his life.
Sam proudly served his country for 21 years in the United States Army, including three tours of duty in Vietnam. His commitment and leadership earned him the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After retiring from the military, he worked as an independent contractor with Chevron Oil Company in Sudan and Nigeria for over four years.
Returning stateside, Sam built and managed Smathers Properties in Tampa. In his later years, he cherished traveling and family gatherings, often returning to his roots in Canton, NC, where his heart remained deeply connected.
Sam is survived by his children, Deidre McManus (Darrell) and Michael-Anne Ashman (Bill); his stepchildren, Michael Andrews and David Andrews (Kirk Slater); his grandchildren, Ashley Cummins, Brittany Moore, Amber Ashman, and Ruby Ashman; and his great-grandchildren, Harper, Kenleigh, Booker, Braylyn, and Brantley.
A Celebration of Life will be held in his honor on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Morning Star United Methodist Church in Canton, North Carolina. All who knew and loved Sam are welcome to join in honoring his remarkable life.
The care of Mr. Smathers has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Canton.
