Roy Lee Sorrells, age 87, passed away Monday, March 24, 2014 at John F. Keever Solace Center. Born in Haywood County, he was a son of the late Joseph and Emma Harris Sorrells. Roy resided in Taylor, Michigan for 31 years, retiring from Whitehead & Kells Corporation as a structural steel fabricator and also retired from Haywood County Schools as a custodian at Lake Junaluska Elementary. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Bonham Sorrells, who died in 2000; a brother, Harris Sorrells; a sister, Mary Robinson; two granddaughters, Angela Marie Queen and Sharon Queen Rathbone; and a son-in-law, Gerald Queen. Roy was a United States Navy veteran having served during World War II and was an active member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. He will be remembered for being a hard worker, having a strong work ethic and enjoyed fixing and "tinkering" with lawnmowers. He is survived by a daughter, Betty Queen of Canton; two sisters, Bonnie Carver of Canton and Emma Jo Buckner of Morristown, Tennessee; two grandchildren, Katie Fisher (Brian) and Laura Williams (Alan); a grandson-in-law, Ken Rathbone; four great-grandchildren, Kali Putnam, Tyler Putnam, Brenton Fisher, and Savannah Smith; and several special nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 27, 2014 in the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Bruce Cayton and Reverend Jeff King officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service.
